DIY Patriotic Kids Necklace

In the afternoon you will often find my daughter sitting at the kitchen table with a container of beads making herself a necklace or bracelet. It's one of her favorite activities. We recently got out our patriotic straws again and after some fantastic scissor practice cutting the straws into beads, my daughter had fun creating a DIY Patriotic Kids Necklace. This is a perfect craft for the Fourth of July and kids will love wearing their necklace while attending festivities and while watching the fireworks. Make sure to check out another adorable Patriotic Necklace using straws over at Buggy and Buddy.

Fireworks {Toddler-Style}

We love fireworks crafts this time of the year at our house! HERE is our favorite from a couple years ago:

While this one is my favorite, my toddler doesn't have control over the glue that well just yet so I decided to improvise this year for her.

I gave her a half sheet of black cardstock and some school glue and let her put dabs and lines where ever she wanted on her paper.

Then we got out our handy Patriotic Stars Spangle Mix from Craftprojectideas.com and she put the little stars (fireworks) all over her black sky.

She had lots of glue spots left over after adding some stars so we got out our Glitter Caddy (also a Craftprojectideas.com product) and she sprinkled glitter all over her paper. I directed her which spots to shake each color.

Pour the glitter off into the garbage can and you are left with a fun fireworks scene!

Thanks for coming by today! I hope you  have a fabulous 4th of July holiday!!

Pony Bead Flag Craft

We finally got some 4th of July crafting in!! I was excited that my 8yr old wanted in on this craft too. He seems to steer away from crafty things lately, so doing projects with him is a special treat for me.

The craft is pretty straight forward but I started by cutting out a piece of cardboard about 5" x 7". We used a left over pizza box from dinner last night. I punched a hole at each end at the top with a hole punch so we could hang it after we were finished.

We started gluing our beads on in the blue section first. Squeeze school glue on a small section and then place your beads on and continue until you have the size you want. Our Pony Beads came from Craftprojectideas.com and were in a special patriotic pack. I couldn't find the exact pack on their website, but if you can't find the patriotic pack at your local Wal-Mart you could always buy individual packs of red, white and blue.

Then continue gluing with your red and white stripes down the flag. We decided to do rows of 2, but afterwards I thought "why didn't we just cut the cardboard at the right size to get 13 single stripes like the real flag?"  :-/

Your toddlers don't have to sit out on this one either. This is a great activity for color recognition and hand-to-eye coordination. I put a section of glue down and told her which color bead to put on the glue. She is Miss Crafty lately so she loved this!!

It is hard to tell but we conveniently covered our holes in the corners with beads. Just make sure the hole is showing inside the bead so you can get your string through it later.

For the stars we used this Patriotic Stars Spangle Mix also from Craftprojectideas.com. This little pack is so fun! We used them for another project too that I'll show you in a couple days.

Pull some white stars out of the pack and glue them down on your flag.

After the glue has completely dried, attach some string to each corner of your flag and you are all done! This is my 8yr old's flag.

Look how cute my toddler's flag turned out!

She's pretty proud of it!!

Find a fun place to hang up your new flag in your house and you have perfect 4th of July decor!

Exploding Fireworks Craft

Last year I made this fun fireworks craft with my boys. They loved the craft, but I noticed that they had a bit of trouble freehanding the fireworks shape themselves. In the picture below, Luke needed a lot of help forming his fireworks with the glue.

While browsing the craft isle at Wal-Mart recently I came across these fun Patriotic Stars and I had a lightbulb go off in my head of how to make this fireworks craft easier for children. Using any sort of star sequin, sticker or button is the key!

Look how much more defined Luke's art turned out this year.

Start by gluing the stars all over a black piece of paper. Then using the corners of the star as a guide, draw your firework lines with school glue. See what I mean pictured below.

Using the stars makes it sooooo much easier for kids to make their fireworks!

Make sure you let the glue dry completely before dumping off the glitter so the colors don't mix.

Since we live in Utah and fireworks aren't available everywhere due to the recent spurt of fires, this fun little craft is a great alternative!  :)

Happy Crafting!!

Paint Stick Button Flag Craft

I was browsing through some old magazines at my Mother-in-Law's house last week and came across a fun idea of making a flag out of paint sticks. I think it was in a Woman's World Magazine, but I'm not certain.  :-/  Since I hadn't made any crafts for the 4th yet with the kids, I knew we had to make it. It turned out so cute!

I attached a gold ribbon to it so it can hang on a hook.

First, I asked my local Wal-Mart paint department for 8 paint sticks. I expected them to not want to give them to me, but they just handed them over without a question at all.  :)  Have your children paint 4 of them red and 4 of them white.

To assemble the flag I placed them in red/white order upside down, and hot glued four craft sticks to the back. See picture below.

Then flip it over and use painters tape to outline the section of the flag that needs to be painted blue. Masking tape will probably work too.

Have your child paint the section blue and then immediately remove the painter's tape while the paint is still wet. Then let the paint dry completely.

Here is what it looked like after it was all painted and dry.

It looked pretty cool as it was, but we wanted to spice it up a bit so my boys glued medium and large sized buttons on the red and white stripes, and small white buttons in the blue section to act as stars.

To attach the gold ribbon, I just simply hot glued it to the back of the flag and tied a bow at the top.

And now we have a fun little decoration for Independance Day.  :)

Happy Crafting!!

Fun & Simple Flag Craft

We did a fun and simple 4th of July Craft today that I thought I would share. Since the 4th is on Monday I thought I'd use it as an opportunity to talk about the American Flag. I don't know why I didn't think about this a couple weeks ago for Flag Day, but oh well. We discussed what all the symbols and colors on the flag mean and then went about crafting our own paper flag. I thought it would be cool if instead of cutting the strips in a straight line we rip the strips out of the paper. It made a cool effect and the kids had fun trying it out.

Materials you will need:
-white sheet of card stock paper
-5 red strips of paper (ripped from a red sheet of construction paper)
-1 blue rectangle (ripped out of a blue sheet of construction paper)
-glue
-star stickers

Directions:
1. Put glue on the red strips of paper and stick them down on your white paper spacing them out to make the red/white flag pattern.

2. Our strips were longer than the white paper so after they were glued on we just trimmed the edges to line up with the paper.

3. Glue your blue rectangle onto the corner of your paper.

4. Put your star stickers on your blue rectangle.

See, 4 simple steps and you've created a cute American Flag.

Fourth of July Fireworks Craft

With July 4th fast approaching, I took some time yesterday to make some fun glitter fireworks with the kids. It is so simple and they turned out so cute!

Materials you will Need:
-Black sheet of construction paper
-glue
-glitter

Directions:
1. have your child use their glue to draw firework shapes on their black sheet of construction paper. I assisted my 4-year old on drawing one of them so he knew what I meant.

2. Sprinkle glitter on top of the glue. I had one of those glitter caddy's that I purchased at Wal-Mart that came with 6 different bright colors, so we tried a different color for each firework.

3. Turn the paper upside to remove the glitter and let it dry completely. This works really good if you add the glitter with the paper inside a cardboard box, but we just carefully turned our paper onto our plastic placemats and then I pushed all the glitter towards the middle and poured it into a sandwich bag to use on a future project.

They turned out so fun! With all the different colors of fireworks on the paper it looks like the Grand Finale.  :)
