DIY Faux Leather Teepee Craft for Kids

Homeschooling my children this year has created an amazing opportunity for me to bring fun into learning about American History in ways that isn't possible in a traditional public school. For instance, in our first unit about explorers we made hard tack which was a main food source for sailors. My kids also braved trying sardines and anchovies which were common in a Spanish seaman's diet. Our American history lessons have coincided perfectly with Thanksgiving this month and along with learning about the Plymouth Colony being established and the first Thanksgiving, we have also been learning about different Native American tribes. Here is a fun DIY faux leather teepee craft to make when learning about Native Americans.

Cupcake Liner Turkey Puppet

I love making crafts with my kids that can be interactive for pretend play or that we can use to reenact a story that we've just read. I came across some darling Cereal Box Turkeys over at Plum Pudding recently and I loved them. I decided to make more of a kid-friendly version that my children could help me with and we are using them as Turkey Puppets. We used one of my favorite crafting materials to make them also, cupcake liners.

Paper Plate Turkey Craft

The one thing that's odd about about being a blogger is the fact that I have to be a step ahead in my holidays, always planning and preparing way in advance for crafts I want to do. So while Halloween isn't until next week, I already feel Halloween'ed out and I'm beyond excited to move on to Thanksgiving. A little sad, I know, but I really don't mind since I love crafting so much. That being said, we've already made a trip to the library this week and picked up some of our favorite Thanksgiving books and today we made this adorable Paper Plate Turkey.

Cupcake Liner Turkey Craft

My daughter and I pulled out some brown mini cupcake liners today and made some cute turkeys.

We stamped the feathers on with an empty toilet paper roll.
Start by gluing one or two cupcake liners on a sheet of cardstock paper.

Press the ends of the empty toilet paper rolls together to form a feather shape (pictured below).

You'll want to use a different toilet paper roll for each color of paint. We used orange, red and yellow.

Dip the toilet paper roll in the paint and press it around the cupcake liner as feathers.

Spread the feathers around both cupcake liners and use all three colors.

This is how mine looked after I pressed all my feathers on.

After the paint dried, we glued on a 2" brown circle face, googly eyes, a beak and gobbler. We drew legs on with orange crayon.

Such a fun turkey craft for an afternoon!

Thanksgiving Turkey Sensory Bin (Invitation to Play)

It's been a couple weeks since I switched out our sensory bin so I decided it was about time I got back on track. This time we decided to play with turkeys.

I went to Dollar Tree yesterday with a couple things on my list and when I walked in the door these adorable solar powered turkey's were flapping their wings and nodding their heads at me. I couldn't resist them! My kids loved them too! After brainstorming some ideas with my 3rd grader (please tell me you do this too) our turkey sensory bin was born.

I put them in a base of oatmeal and used our Lincoln Logs to build a turkey coop for them. We used empty fruit containers as their feed bins with yellow opaque beads from our friends at Craftprojectideas.com as our turkey feed. You can pick up the opaque beads in a pack with several colors at your local Walmart. I included a small pair of tongs for removing the turkey feed in our bin also.

Before I set it all up, we had the turkeys sitting in the window seal all morning with the morning sun to get them charged so they moved while my daughter played with them. You can't see them move in the pictures obviously but seriously, it's so cute!

My daughter had fun feeding the turkeys and practiced removing all the feed back out of the coop. She built a whole new coop for them a bunch of different ways and played pretend with the turkeys. My kids ended up naming the turkeys Tom, Tucker and Teresa and they are sitting back in the window seal waiting for the morning sun tomorrow again.

The sensory bin ended up looking like a big old mess when she was done playing with it. I call that a SUCCESS!!  :)

*I received my opaque beads free of charge from Craftprojectideas.com. All opinions expressed are 100% my own.

"Thankful for You" Treat Bags

I have some really good friends in my neighborhood. They are the kind of friends that the thought of ever having to move away would definitely make me cry. I wanted to do a little something special to let them know that I was thankful for them this month so I made these cute little treat bags with the simple message "Thankful for You".

I bought the little yellow chevron bags from Pick Your Plum. I folded a small doily over the top with a 2" yellow circle with "Thankful for You" printed on it. I clipped it together with these Turkey Clothespin Clips I made.

I've started making them every holiday after being inspired by One Artsy Mama. They are so simple! Cover a clothespin with washi tape and add a sticker at the top. For these turkey ones, I found the stickers at the dollar section at Target. I didn't like how they looked with just one turkey sticker, so I doubled them together with a second color showing through the back. I also added a black eye with a dot of black puffy paint and I added more feathers with gold glitter glue. I purchased my washi tape from Pick Your Plum but you can get it at any craft store.

So what did I stuff in my bags? I could have been all extra creative and baked something at home, but I saw these adorable shortbread cookies at Costco and couldn't resist them. Two of them worked perfectly in each bag and then there were still plenty left for my family to not feel left out.  :)

These would work great for preschool or friend treats for your children as well! I know my kids love making the clothespin clips! You can customize any message on the 2" circle or write directly on the doily.
